Just a few highlights of what stood out for me. In honor of being in Switzerland for #WCEU, I offer my thoughts thus:

Mit zweierlei Mass messen.
Deux poids, deux mesures.
Due pesi e due misure.

I somehow got the first archived date of WordPress.org wrong 🙌probably because I have too many screenshots on my phone. The first archived version (Apr 7, 2003) lists Matt as the main developer and contributing developers as “coming soon”. The second (Jun 1, 2003) lists Mike Little & other 2 devs.

There is a lot of mystery around the relationship between what was once called “WordPress Inc” and is now Automattic. The struggle to balance the needs of a for-profit business and the needs of the volunteer community has never been dealt with openly, nor has it been resolved.

(Aside: Worth noting that one of those devs—the founder of WPMU—didn’t consider his version a fork because he was building on b2, not competing with it.) profiles.wordpress.org/donncha/

3) Shortly after launching, two developers who had been working on other viable b2 forks joined up with WordPress (The other two devs listed on the original WordPress.org About page.)

2) Three days before the first version of WordPress launched, that main developer, b2 founder Michel Valdrighi, named WordPress as “the new official branch” of b2.

1) The GPL software that WordPress forked, b2—with a vibrant contributor community and roughly 2000 sites actively using it—was being sunsetted by its departing main developer.

Beyond its enthusiastic collaborative community, WordPress had the benefit of one co-founder with 20 years of programming experience, and the other who was running web dev shops and studying business. It also had a few more rare advantages in its inception.

People in the WordPress community generally like WordPress. It’s kind of a thing. Maybe it’s the software. Maybe it’s the community. Maybe it’s the ethos of open source and collaborative contribution that has been part of WordPress since before it even had a name.
