Just the thought of Kasumi makes her heart pang. She’s…gone. They’d promised to win gold together, to be the best in the world. And now… Now it’s just Sumire, and she doesn’t even remember why. A street. Two discarded umbrellas. Red staining the gathered rain, and tears Sumire couldn’t tell apart from the raindrops that soaked her skin. But why were they in that busy street to begin with? Sumire’s head spikes with pain again. So, that memory is blocked off, too. How often is this going to happen to her? Did Guernica’s Spell really have that much of an effect on her? Something tells her this has been going on for far longer than that.

Akira fights the demands of the script. I can’t say that. I won’t say it! The words are cruel. They’re wrong. He refuses. He—has—to fight it— “You—did not—murder your mother.” Akira gasps for air, winded from the effort, but he did it. He defied the stage, and he can’t help but smile a little at the victory. The audience and the gods go still. The stage lights dim. Shadow Akechi narrows his eyes, his smile twisting into a sneer. “What did you just say?” “You didn’t kill her, Akechi,” says Akira, and the words come easily now that he’s defied the stage once. Now able to move freely, he steps forward to take Shadow Akechi’s hand in his own, but he’s slapped away. “That is not the line.” “I won’t say it,” says Akira stubbornly. “It’s not true. You were just a kid. This play of yours—it’s a lie. Even if you might believe it.” Shadow Akechi’s sneer darkens. “You will not defy the script, Thor. Try again.” The lights come back on, and that force returns, stronger than ever before. It demands Akira lie.
