I’d forgotten.” Stede almost reacts to that, almost protests, but then he recognizes the teasing. “Damn you, you’re not meant to have a sense of humor, Izzy,” he pouts. They’re still finding their footing together, and this is yet another slippery spot: Izzy’s dry sense of humor, his inclination to talk like he’s totally sincere, like he’s come to understand the vague outline of what a joke looks like but hasn’t quite mastered it. “I’m a ray of fucking sunshine,” says Izzy, the corners of his mouth finally quirking up a little. “Obviously I remember who’s in charge of this ship, this crew. But I’m not calling you Captain, no matter how much you want me to. I’ve only ever had one captain I respected, only ever knew one who earned that title, and there’s no fucking way that will change."

They set sail again on a Wednesday when the sky is clear and the sea is friendly. Of the crew that hasn’t left him, everyone joins him—even Izzy. “Are you sure about this?” Stede asks him as the Republic gets smaller. “There’s no reason to be here if you don’t want it.” Izzy looks at him strangely, a lit cigarette in his hand. He slowly breathes out a stream of smoke over the water. “Why ask that now?” “No need to act like every question I ask you is an affront to your delicate sensibilities.” “If you want me gone, just say so.” It seems like it should be strange having Izzy around like this, but Stede’s found himself quickly growing used to it. Funny how that works; you stay in someone’s company for a little while and suddenly it’s like they’re supposed to be there.

“Show me the note,” says Izzy. It’s in his hand, clutched so tightly that you’d think that Bonnet was afraid it would run away. Bonnet, trembling a little from the force of his grip, slowly unfurls his fingers, until he’s able to hand the piece of paper to Izzy. Edward’s handwriting is immediately recognizable in the slant and the messy Ns and Ms and the way that he signs his name. Izzy’s adept enough at reading, good enough to keep the ship’s logs and follow any map, but his notes are always short and to the point, and he has trouble with writing that isn’t blocky and sentences that get too long. So he can’t completely read the letter—Ed tends to ramble when he writes, starts to think faster than he can get the words down and everything tends to gets a little messy—but he gets the gist. He sees <i>sorry</i> and <i>mistake</i> and <i>don’t look for me</i> and, surprisingly <i>keep an eye on Izzy if he’s still around, he’s—</i> and then some more that Izzy can’t read. “What did he say about me?” Izzy says, dumbly. “Is that— give it back to me!” Bonnet says wetly, grabbing the letter back from Izzy. He sighs, then reads: “Oh, and I’m sure Izzy is going to be weird about this whole thing. He’ll probably try to stab you again, and when he fails, he’ll run away. But it’s my fault he’s so fucking angry all the time. Don’t get too mad. But also, don’t let him stab you, stab him back if he tries.” “Come the fuck on.” “I never worked things out with him, so keep an eye on Izzy if he’s still around, he’s the best first mate a man can have if you can be the kind of captain he needs. I wasn’t.” Bonnet clicks his teeth. “He was a great captain! Why did you make him think that he wasn’t a great captain?”
