imo the problem is not so much books but papers, which are realistically only accessible if you have a friend in a university who will send you a pdf

tbh most of the university presses publish at prices that, while more expensive than trade books, are definitely affordable for people that aren't libraries. American UPs specifically often aim at a broad readership. Verso is well-priced too and always on sale but you have to buy into the politics

that building opened about 3 days ago (It's the Schwarzman centre in Oxford)

Eating out is noticeably cheaper in every European country I've been to recently

in fairness so has Badenoch and her reaction has mostly been 'well maybe I *am* not really British'

It seems odd to me that there wouldn't be enough non-SCG MPs annoyed enough to put Thornberry on the ballot given 120 signed the welfare amendment, even if the vote is split with Powell

The idea that Labour (tough on immigration, pro-Ukraine, right of their voters on Israel) isn't paying enough attention to Frederiksen (tough on immigration, pro-Ukraine, right of her voters on Israel) on immigration, Ukraine and Israel is for the birds

Disgrace does seem to me (besides Stoner) the most obvious book this descriptor refers to but a book by a South African in his 80s can't really be "the original sin of the American Literature curriculum and the MFA". I don't think Coetzee is really very close to that world.

Yeah, the tories have simply gone from strength to strength ever since

This is exactly the type of comment that's most unhelpful. The protesters aren't 'ordinary people', they're organised far-right groups. Being portrayed in the media as 'ordinary people' is exactly what they want.

Any you'd particularly recommend?

I'm sure it still will but it's still wasted energy. A lot of people won't bother to click next time because they've already heard the news

The launch should've been "whatever whatever and that's why we're launching [party name], and here's our website where you can see our platform, become a member and donate." Now, when they actually do launch that stuff, they won't get as much attention

I don't think what's going on now will affect how people vote. But what it does mean is that at the first big moment when Sultana and Corbyn are on everyone's mind there's no way of joining or donating to their party. It's a waste of press attention.

"They need the votes of people who want a Competent govt but don't like tax"

Political priorities of these voters:
A. Have cake
B. Eat it
