Been reminded again today of a fundamental truth. If you can't articulate why someone might disagree with you in good faith, you aren't arguing against them, you're arguing against a totem of them that only exists in your imagination.

thanks. definitely agree rents are too high! just seems that even if say half of the rent is paid by the state then LLs effectively have more people able to bid up the price. but I don't have any real evidence to back up a direct link to increasing rents so don't really know either way!

is there not an argument that housing benefit just goes straight to landlords and increases rents etc? so it's helpful to an individual but has unintended consequences?

Financial crisis was an external event, I think you would have got many many more if you had included adoption of austerity policies.

strange (to me) to include the 97 election, but not the decision to invade Iraq. 97 ushered in/coincided with good times, which began to seriously unravel with Iraq...
