These findings are promising. Evidence in this area is, however, limited and heterogenous; well designed larger trials are needed in the area of dietary interventions in the context of chronic kidney disease and its related acid-base disturbances.

Interestingly, our subgroup analysis showed a superiority of plant-based interventions 🥦🫑🍎 in improving serum bicarbonate (a marker of acid-base balance) and eGFR (a common marker of kidney function).

▫️These interventions didn't have adverse effects on serum potassium and nutritional status.

Our pooled analysis showed that dietary interventions can actually be beneficial.

For those curious, these interventions are either towards lowering dietary acid (through low-protein diets) or adding dietary base (through plant-based diets, mostly adding fruit and vegetables)

Available research in this area is still limited and hererogenous. We still need larger, well designed trials in the area of dietary interventions in the management of chronic kidney disease and acid-base disturbances.

Interestingly, according to our subgroup analysis, 🥦🥕🫑plant based diets were superior in improving serum bucarbonate (a biomarker of serum acid content) and eGFR (a common marker if kidney function).
Our pooled data did not show any adverse effects on serum potassium levels and nutritional status.

📚To synthesize the best available evidence, our team in M&M lab and Seven Oaks CDIC performed a systematic review and meta-analysis, looking into the effects of 🥗dietary interventions in the context of chronic kidney disease, their safety and compliance.
