If you are building up a profile, it is (maybe was) prestigious and can help. I doubt anyone is surviving on what they pay freelancers, though. I once confronted a columnist about the appalling pay, and he told me he didn't need the money. (And looked appalled that I worked for money.)

I always felt Rowling's theft of so much material from Diana Wynne Jones' books was enough reason not to read her. I hated her books when asked to read them aloud to a child, and her recent behavior confirms my first impression, but she has always been shitty.

I'm sure it feels like that now. I remember this girl screaming, "I hate you!" at her mother for turning off the wifi at bedtime. She does not/did not hate her mother. They are very close.

I recently watched a friend's 26-year-old daughter thank her for turning off the internet and setting rules that taught her to control its power over her. "I have to fire people because they can't look away from their phones," she said. "I would be one of those..." He will thank you later.
