And yes, Mastodon missed the boat on this one. Although I also like Mastodon, the double @ in the username is confusing for most. As you can see here, it is unnecessary.

The beauty of this is also it is future proof. Because if you own a domain now or in the future, you also own the handle. You don't need to worry about claiming the handle in advance.

You may need to pay $9 per year for the domain, but it is yours then and it's cheaper. In addition, you can always change the handle while keeping the domain (preventing anyone else from using it as a handle).
