9/ The History of England by Jane Austen, Cassandra Austen (Illustrator).

Young Jane Austen was both audacious and hilarious. She wrote this littlest book when she was only 16 and calls herself "a partial, prejudiced and ignorant historian". Nice illustrations by her sister Cassandra.

It is puzzling to me why anyone considers Mr. Douthat to be a serious public intellectual. All he seems to be relay/repeat the most mundane partisan takes, couched in religious thought. Now, he conflates city-people and childless-people as identical and deliberately internationalizes the suburbia.

Terrific and landmark books like Animal Farm or The Trial were made into not so great films. (LOTR films were good but not as good as the book). Somehow plays (Shakespeare and Wilde), even modern day plays (Miller, Mamet) have translated well into films.

I think that they are different media. Great books don't often translate into great movies. In fact, pulpy books make better movies. Godfather and Jaws are good examples. Occasionally a joint collaboration succeeds. 2001: A Space Odyssey became strikingly excellent (but different) book & film.

"Those actions matter, both our crimes and our kindnesses". Thanks for the wonderful essay rethinking of Sagans PBD. I had often half-justified to myself that 'in the vastness of cosmos, my actions may not matter to the universe, but they matter to *me*'. Helped me rethink that further.

It is a LOT of work for authors. so I am very sympathetic.
If I have to sign 1/1000th of copies, I would just sign S -- so, I fully understand and I am very thankful.

If only refs and authors knew and followed Williams' suggestions on gendered pronouns we wouldn't have so many "he/she" uses in the reports.
