People feel like their reputations are on the line, especially when their friends, families and employers can see them too.

Too much social capital at stake when you post, but leaving "the arena" also feels like too much to lose :(

All the while, algos promote what gets you angriest.

And they say the internet's gotten better...
Reminds me of this.

Enshittification as Capitalism is very real, but at least capitalism has some checks and balances.

At the end of the day, people just want to be where their friends are or where work is and if those two groups leave these platforms then a mass exodus could happen.

The only option we really have is to be conscious of these issues, talk about them and make value-based decisions around where we spend our time online.

We can always smoke fewer cigarettes, have fewer drinks, watch less TV etc. if we want to and it doesn't mean that these things should be banned.

Loved this video and you're right: until platforms update their "engagement at all costs" operating model, people will still keep making slop, ragebait and other harmful content for profit, regardless of the human consequence.

AI exacerbates this issue, but to your point, also predates it.

OpenAI launched the app internally last week. So far, it’s received overwhelmingly positive feedback from employees, according to documents viewed by WIRED. Employees have been using the tool so frequently that some managers have joked it could become a drain on productivity.

This made me lol.

AI workslop is always derivative.
That can be helpful in many situations but not for something that will cut through the noise of other AI workslop.

I'm a big believer morally in open social too, but I'm curious if it's a reason for true users to hop over to Atproto based apps.

It wasn't the primary driver for the current wave of bluesky users.

It's gotta be an app that just blows the socks off of people unrelated to the infra.
