Attention to detail with the physical evidence? According to the article, they found the same zip ties in her car as the ones she was tied up with. Bit of an oversight.

This is a different person, but similar tactic.

Gotta appeal to that demographic of right-wingers who aren't racist about Arabs but are about Africans

Call me naive, but I think we can totally have medicine, vaccines, glasses, and other advances of the last centuries without conceding to unchecked industrialization.

That is unfortunately just how numbers work.
November 16, 2025 at 1:21 AM
The more accurate version of this is that there are still lots of incredibly right-wing rural voters in places like California and New York, they're just outweighed by Democrats overall in those states, and same goes for urban liberals in places like Texas.

Will have to see if anything happens with Webtoons I guess

Anime is also super merch-driven, though (it's part of the reason for the glut of lowest-common-denominator isekai stuff). It's related, but I wouldn't say it's the "entire" issue.

They literally did that in the latest Bond movie- Craig Bond got replaced and the new 007 was a black woman.
November 11, 2025 at 1:57 PM
The Bond iteration they killed off was already a soft reboot- Casino Royale was supposed to be this one's first mission as 007. I guess they expected us to think that sometime offscreen he went back in time and had 40 years worth of adventures??

I feel like a PR person would have ripped the phone out of his hands when this is what he was doing for hours

I think this one has got to him because he's posted at least three separate responses to this over the last 10 hours:

The judge instructed the jury that "touching offensive to a person of reasonable sensibilities" counts as an injury per the definition of assault. It's pretty difficult to imagine that the jury genuinely did not believe that a reasonable person would be offended by getting hit with a sandwich.

I remember reading about the man who killed his mother and himself, who posted videos on youtube talking about how chatGPT affirmed his delusions that his mother was surveilling him with a printer, and had tried to poison him. Absolutely soulcrushing.

They're happy to show up if they don't think there'll be real consequences. See how the ICE guys cling to their masks and anonymity. But they are supreme cowards who are skittish if they think there's actual danger of any accountability.

They then spent the next few years telling themselves not to show up for these stunts, even when Trump was directly calling for them to appear, because it was all a Fed trick to get them arrested again. It happened over and over.

Genuinely, you have to acknowledge the massive push to back Cuomo, including getting Republicans to hold their noses for him- it just still lost.

Engaging with where the tech actually is right now is also to engage with what social critique is applicable right now (not from Asimov's time). And isn't that social commentary part of what sci-fi prides itself on, at least ostensibly?
November 6, 2025 at 7:37 PM
But I guess a little more seriously, I also meant from the societal angle as much from the technical lens- the old stand-by of "can AIs be people??" and stuff like that reflects the curiosities and anxieties of a different age (but have become codified into the genre, as you note).
November 6, 2025 at 7:35 PM
I feel like I may be a little cooked given that my first thought was "aw come on, you don't need a phd to understand how a neural network works" lol
November 6, 2025 at 7:25 PM
I joke about how decades of sci-fi media about AI has left us ill-prepared for all the genAI snake oil... but it would be nice to see more of the facts of how this stuff is built and functions to be reflected in modern sci-fi, rather than falling back on the well-trod path.

People have already drawn the correlation between Musk liking art of Misa from Death Note, with how Grok's anime sona looks.

The thing about this narrative is that it's always been burying the lede: the actual outlier is that young women are extremely anti-MAGA
