Also timing plays into the experience: when I’ve had ST 2nd semester, students almost always feel a sense of loyalty to me and have a hard time adjusting to someone new. In 1st semester, they don’t have the sense of loyalty but almost always have a hard time adjusting to just me afterwards🤣

You’ve also got to get out of the room once they’re on their feet. It’s hard for me to let go of control, and students act differently when you’re there. They need to space to figure it out and fly…and the confidence that they can do it in their own classroom.

I’ve considered a blog post called: Student Teachers- the good, the bad, the ugly. I’ve had all kinds- meet before hand and make sure it will be a good fit before agreeing. You’ll spend A LOT of time together and it’s super tough if you disagree on fundamental SLA principles.

For what it’s worth: I’ve turned all my vocab quizzes into Reading Assessments: Read this paragraph and define the underlined words. Still assessing vocab but they’re getting input and can use context (like in real life).

I think there’s nothing better than good old fashioned Gesturing! (And when they get bored with it, I pull out stickers and award them for fastest/funniest/most flair, etc. My HSers go crazy for stickers)

Ben, I live for you calling me Queen 👑❤️ I pulled this out this week for an unruly class and it settled them right down. It always shocks me how well it works. Like magic 🪄
