I also must express my deep appreciation to the group of survivors who bravely stood up and publicly shared their stories of trauma to protect students, including at this morning’s press conference in Pasadena. Their commitment to this vital legislation will prevent future abuse.

I know every case of abuse represents a young person whose life has been altered and is left with lasting trauma. And for schools, the financial toll of settlements is staggering as well. We must do better. Protecting our kids is the most basic promise we make.

My SB 848 would strengthen student safety in California schools to prevent, detect and address employee sexual misconduct. SB 848 also broadens mandated reporting requirements, enhances employee training, and revises relevant provisions in law to ensure stronger protections.

As the new school year begins, it is critical to address student accessibility and affordability to #highereducation, which I am committed to improving as the Sen Ed Chair.
