don't forget the huge subsidy of commuting infrastructure! If the roads all had tolls we'd see different preferences and quick

ACA only insures 1/6 of households - needs to be more ambitious if it is to create a political critical mass. Besides which ACA is a kludge. Its time for Medicare-for-all full stop.

LA just feels sort of half-done - they laid down huge swathes of housing in the 20s-40s - then in to 50s-60s they chopped it up with the freeways and built out suburbs... a real connected "central city" is only just now being built maybe? - along the E and A lines?

density brings all kinds of liveliness - makes transit more viable - ultimately enables pedestrian life hopefully!

...not sure I'm going to live to see that! Unless perhaps a new pandemic takes out a bunch of senators... Or the fascists nullify the constitution and are removed via rebellion... gotta hope...

Not sure. re: housing in blue states, zoning needs to be controlled at the state rather than local level - that's actually simple (see Japan). Re purchasing power for working people that needs a strong labor movement (can be outside government).

Presidents are not in the pothole business. Presidential skill set is fundamentally political - leading a party and nation - rather than managerial/bureaucratic. See "Joe Biden" to grok the distinction.

Good - JD has no game. Leo has no instinct for the public - his audience has always been the Senate and Thiel likewise does not exactly vibe with the ppl. Its going to be a bloodbath.

hey just stop relitigating 2024! We need everyone on board. That means don't shit on the left, the trans or the normies - demanding effective responsive leadership is not the same as this kind of fractious bullshit. Every incumbent in the world took an L in 24. No need to keep picking the scab

^this - I do feel a little foolish haglging with a lion like @michaelemann.bsky.social

I think the failure here is not so much that the deal is stupid (it is) but that politically, in terms of rallying *our side* it has not been handled in good faith and I'll agree that's disqualifying (Schumer should go). But that said I think we are in a better position then we were 40 days ago
November 10, 2025 at 5:08 PM
I think the message 'Trump raised your premiums' has broken through - + there will some kind of vote supposedly... We get another bite at the apple in 80 days - the crisis may gradually crescendo. Agree we are going to need real leadership into the storm...
November 10, 2025 at 5:06 PM
weirdly enough they do follow parliamentary procedure for now! And the discharge petition originated with a Republican (Massey) so there's that
November 10, 2025 at 5:00 PM
I'm not sure this is a disaster - the government shuts down again Jan 30th - by then people have actually had to face premium increases and those will be 100% owned by the Republicans - meanwhile SNAP recipients will eat. And now attention will swing to Grijalva/Epstein.
