These findings reveal how anti-abortion campaigns restrict access even without changing laws. They also suggest potential underreporting of abortions as miscarriages, as stigma intensifies for both women seeking care and providers offering it.

After 2012, we found:

- Reported abortions declined ⬇️ while miscarriages increased ⬇️

- Declines in abortion observed across all socioeconomic groups, strongest among lower-SES women

- Increases in miscarriage primarily driven by lower-educated women and those outside the richest quintile

In 2012, Turkey launched an anti-abortion campaign and drafted restrictive legislation. The law never passed, but prior academic and journalistic evidence pointed to a de-facto ban emerging.

Using all Turkish DHS waves, we investigated how abortion, miscarriage and stillbirth rates changed.
