I wrote this several years ago, and I don't think anything needs to be changed. A constitutional crisis is not a crisis for constitutionalism. The capitalist state form is the problem, not a purported lack of fidelity to particular constitutional principles.

Constitutional crises are continuous with constitutional conflict, not sharply demarcated from it. Constitutions sometimes fail to delimit the scope of political conflict. As forms of depoliticisation they are susceptible to the politicisation of social antagonism. But the possibil- ity of that happening is immanent to the practice of constitutionalism, not a threat to it. Recently bruited concerns about the stability or longevity of constitutionalism notwithstanding, crises and extra-legality are central to the endurance of constitutionalism. In the present moment, it is not constitutionalism itself that is at risk, but rather particular constitutional orders, regimes, norms, and practices. Indeed, constitutionalisation is likely to be central to projects to further delimit and constrain the already truncated space of politics in capitalist society. It is possible that democratic institutions will be etiolated to the point that a ‘minimalist’ conception of democracy seems hopelessly maximalist. If this comes to be, it will be accomplished in part through the strengthening, not the erosion, of constitutional constraints on democratic politics. The eclipse of constitutional democracy does not betoken the abandonment of constitutionalism. It betokens the strengthening of constitutional constraints (both formal and material) on politics—at the expense of democracy within social relations writ large. A crisis in the institutions of parliamentary democracy need not be a crisis of constitutionalism.

Some seem not to realize that this policy at TC Columbia (& similar ones at Barnard & elsewhere) are NOT blanket bans on political activity. There will be selective nonenforcement for political speech that admin, board members, and donors like; and prior restraint for political speech they dislike.
Anti-speech policy at Teachers College, Columbia University: "In order to ensure the safety of the TC community, and to foster an environment where all are free to learn, work, and live, any current TC student, faculty, or staff member planning a protest or other public demonstration on College property must submit an application for consideration to receive support from the College in producing this event. No protest or other public demonstration shall occur on College-owned or controlled property without prior written College authorization. This includes but is not limited to, any meeting, gathering, or activity to express views, disagreement, or support regarding a given subject, such as a march, vigil, parade, protest, picketing, tabling, teach-in, sit-in, or leafleting (the distribution of protest materials or flyers). Failure to inform the College in advance may result in disciplinary action."
