boxing uses heavier gloves to protect the hands, not the head. the idea is if the hands are protected, the bout can go on for longer.
MMA uses 5oz gloves, and what's interesting is that there seems to be fewer instances of cumulative brain damage in MMA than boxing.

In MMA, if you get knocked down, the fight's usually over. The ref doesn't give you a count and let you back up so you can accumulate more rounds of head shots.
Anyway. Yes the weight of the gloves matters. As anyone who has ever boxed can tell you. If it didn't matter they wouldn't regulate it.
