On this last Sunday of 2025, I share a few words of encouragement and hope which I found in the Old Testament Lectionary text Scriptures for the 1st Sunday After Christmas Day. As I thought about all that has happened in 2025, I found comfort in this passage to share with this audience at the end of this year. The unnamed shepherds, in the middle of their work, received a divine invitation. How did they respond? They weren't the only ones who received some unexpected news. I take a close look at this passage from Luke 2, and use it to ask ourselves, how are we living ready and with expectation today? Afterall, today, in our lives and in the lives of others all around us, there are so many things - expected and unexpected - taking place.

How do we know we are doing the right thing and operating in God's will? We don’t want to miss it. That's how I felt when I was younger and even still now that I'm older, among many different opportunities, sometimes I wonder which one is truly for me. I offer some thoughts from different scholars to help broaden the message typically shared from this passage (at least from the conservative circles I grew up in). May it encourage you!

When I cut off all the white mold infested leaves of my cantaloupe plant in an effort to keep the disease from spreading, I inadvertently cut off its life source. That plant didn't die immediately, but it did die slowly when I cut off its way of making food. Likewise, in our busy lives, how are we cutting off our sources of spiritual life too?

Mark 2, verse 5 says that when Jesus saw THEIR faith, he responded with a controversial declaration to the paralyzed man lying on the mat in the middle of a packed room that included the authorized Scripture interpreters of that time (the scribes and more). What did everyone do? What were their responses? And how can examining this story closely from the book of Mark help us today with our own moments and experiences that reveal to all just where we’ve been placing our faith and trust?

Someone asked me if I get nervous when I know I'm about to speak (preach). I said no- well, unless it's somewhere new I'm preaching, I don't really get nervous. Later when I thought about that question more, I realized that a more fuller response would be to share that I don't get nervous- I get prayerful. I NEED the Lord to preach to ME because how else can I preach anything to someone else?

Thinking about the changing seasons we're in in which here in Central Texas, it looks like Fall is starting to happen with several cooler weather days in a row, only to get hit with heat again. Nevertheless, I see many thriving and growing, even in this climate. They've learned to adapt, figuring out a way to continue forward, with good roots, and great soil.

When entering new spaces, many of us (like me) often shrink ourselves—quiet, cautious, observant. But Jesus entered his ministry boldly, declaring his mission from Isaiah and proclaiming, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:21) His hometown was initially proud, expecting special treatment. But Jesus challenged that, reminding them through Elijah and Elisha that God’s grace often reaches outsiders.

This semester is a busy one y'all! Even still, we can commit to making an intentional break during our week (or day) to spend time on things that matter the most. Last semester (January 2025) was my first semester serving as a volunteer with a wonderful organization called Christian Women's Job Corps in Waco (CWJC). As I've gotten to know the women who participate in this program and even watch a few of them graduate in May, I knew this was and is a worthwhile cause to be a part of.

The author of the book of Luke was purposeful in giving an "orderly account" of the events in Jesus' life- even before Jesus' earthly life- to help us to discern who he really was. When Simon was told to drop his nets in Luke 5, what made him respond and do it even when it didn't make sense? If we look back at the way this was laid out in Luke, Simon's reason was right there.
