After failure to find any rare warblers at St Margaret's a visit to Sandwich Bay for the unusually showy Hume's Warbler. A Snow Bunting on the beach was an added bonus.

Large numbers of gulls moving north at St Margaret's on Sunday morning, including at least 9 Caspian Gulls (5x 1w, 4x 2w). Comfortably my biggest day count in Kent and no doubt a sign of things to come.

Large numbers of Mediterranean Gulls are currently present off the East Kent coast, predominantly adults. Over the last month I've seen 19 colour-ringed birds (1x Poland, 6x Germany, 1x France, 3x Netherlands and 8x Belgium).

A brief lunchtime check in some coastal bushes didn't result in the hoped for Pallas's Warbler. A Yellow-browed Warbler near Walmer Castle, 8 Firecrest, 20 Goldcrest, Blackcap and 7 Chiffchaffs were nice though. Also a late Swallow south.

Good vismig this morning at Bockhill, predominantly finches with >2900 Goldfinches, 101 Crosssbills but also a wide selection of other species. Dartford Warbler and GN Diver provided a good supporting cast.

A group of five Curlew Sandpipers on Restharrow Scrape was a welcome sight this lunch break. GWE, Cattle Egret and White Stork also seen nearby.

Today's lunchtime walk resulted in this 1 cy Caspian Gull on Deal beach and getting completely soaked.
September 4, 2025 at 4:49 PM
A leucistic Starling this morning at St. Margaret's. Otherwise quiet in blustery conditions.
September 2, 2025 at 12:25 PM
Quiet off Deal y'day afternoon, with only an Artic Skua of note. So attention turned to the gulls with a juv YLG present and three juvenile Caspian Gulls observed arriving from the east.

That's this years swift season over. Unfortunately no breeding attempts but one pair roosted in one of our boxes since mid June and plenty of interest in the other boxes. Fingers crossed for 2026.
July 28, 2025 at 6:01 PM
The usual summer arrival of juvenile Yellow-legged Gulls is now in full swing, with different birds seen on Deal beach every day.

A quick look for the Serins at Sandwich Bay this morning was successful, with at least 3 (probably 4) birds present. A look for gulls at St Margaret's y'day resulted in 2 Caspian and 1 YLG amongst large numbers going north.

My Caspian Gull total for the 24/25 season in the Deal/Dover area stands at 55 birds. This is the highest count to date & in line with the range expansion across Europe.
32 juv/1w, 16 2w, 1 3w and 6 adults. Ringing recoveries were from Poland (4) and the more recently established colonies in NL (1).
