My mom just said they look like maybe they were used for separating files. They are definitely straight knitting needles that were bent for some purpose. My first thought was disposal.

Absolutely you are not. I always buy at least one ball extra and if the pattern is very cropped I buy two or more extra.

Heads up, Knitty is a free web-zine (started in the early 2000s when that was a thing) All of their patterns are free. And usually pretty good

The allergies mostly aren't an issue. I live in Alabama so wool only really makes sense for maybe a month out of the year. But I hung around an LYS for a few years and the hand dyeds are sooooo pretty.

So I actually took a day off work this week to a) purge my stash of the animal fibers to which I am allergic and b)organize my stash. I'm in.

I like the idea of adding another smaller yarn. However, considering that this is currently a more transitional weather period you may need to consider adding more colors to your pallet. Or maybe using different colors of the lace/fingering held together.

For the question of frog or not, do you love it enough to put in the work to figure it out and finish it? Or will it bug you to do it? Will it spark joy?

I would slip the two stitches purlwise (so that they aren't twisted) and then pass the first stitch over the second. This instruction only really seems to make sense if you are binding off stitches in the middle of the row where indicating the left hand needle tells you which stitches to bind off
