The London Jewish Bakers’ Union was the longest-lived Jewish trade union, operating from 1905 to 1970.

The banner reminded shoppers to buy bread with the union label, which guaranteed it was baked under acceptable working conditions.

This postcard from the late 1920s shows immigrants waiting for a ship sailed by a figure representing the New Year. Themes of immigration were popular as more and more Eastern European Jews were moving to the UK and America.

It's back to school for many this week.

This photograph from @thelondonarchives.bsky.social is a girls' Hebrew lesson at the Jews' Free School in 1908. The school has been educating the community since 1732 and continues today.

The balance sheet is from the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research shows £100 was given by the Dock Labourers Strike Committee who showed solidarity with the tailors.

After five weeks, the strikers’ demands for a 10½ hour day and a limit on overtime were agreed.

This weekend marks Tisha B'Av, a solemn time for the Jewish community that commemorates tragedies throughout history from the destruction of The First Temple to the holocaust.

Born this day, 1909, Sir Nicholas Winton was a British stockbroker who organised a small group of people that transported 669 children from Czechoslovakia to Britain just before the outbreak of World War II.

On 15th April, 1945, British forces entered the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.

Yesterday, to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation, more than a thousand survivors and families attended commemoration events there.
