The last book is, in my opinion, intolerable. He does Susan so dirty.

Seems odd to say it but thanks for all the episodes and great insights and research... Was a delight to revisit my favourite band with a different perspective

I'm not here to start any arguments.. Just pointing out the phrasing "free money" is very misleading. It connotation is Ireland or the other countries are doing something wrong or underhanded.

I'm not arguing the fiscal pros or cons of the rebate. It's really a natural part of most non us government policies. It encourages productions to spend money in countries around the world which might not otherwise come.

To be clear I'm sorry for anything bad that's happening to LA.

We speak English... You'll be grand.

Also to note to the original poster, it's a tax rebate so not free money per ce. Any production has to pay the tax and it's then refunded once certain conditions are met. The state doesn't give any money away it essentially gives discounts

I'd argue that when a band had success like AFTP and they make millions etc, when they've toured endlessly, it's practically impossible to have the same output. Rem almost buck the trend but theres a line of thinking that says a band's best material is usually within their first 3 albums.
March 24, 2025 at 9:19 PM
It's interesting to hear you sum up the last 5 albums. I think Lucas was absolutely 100 right though. I don't think any band of any note produces significant career defining albums in their late years. It's also why around the sun isn't a disaster as it comes 13 albums into a very successful career

It's been a ride.
Listening to the podcast gave me an excuse to fall back in love with R.e.m
Not that they're ever far from my heart but I've learnt a new appreciation for all 3 eras of band.

I don't think any lyricist that's around for decades and have written 15 albums write the same way they used to. I think the cornet element was something they were happy to embrace. When you've written masterpieces like Find the River or Night swimming its hard to try topping that

There's definitely precedent for some band to do "sequels" in music. The obvious one the comes to mind is Metallicas Unforgiven and unforgiven 2.

I think I got a little put off my oh my heart due to the Houston connection but I quickly learnt you love it. Sure the song even addressed it "Hear the answer and call, hear this song, rearranged"
