I grow food and pollinator plants from seed in zone 10a.
I have to admit, I am too 😔 they produce more cut flowers per square foot than any other flower, can’t beat that.

I live in the Bay Area, but I never pass up a chance to make a Portland trip! As a vegetarian, Portland is one of my favorite food spots. Really hope this happens 🙏🏼

@regularjo3.bsky.social I agree, but at the same time, strawberries like needles a lot more than wood chips, since the plants have sensitive crowns.

Also, needles stay dry, which is great for me because my soil is clay, and a heavy rain turns it into mud.

Finally, slugs and snails hate needles!

Clean? Definitely not lol, I had to pick out lots of plastic. Toxic? I doubt it. It’s on raised ground next to an empty lot, so I don’t think there’s much runoff risk. Free? It sure is 🙂 but I also wonder if this is a bad idea…

Thank you, friend 🌷 I wish they were mine, my friend brought them with her when a bunch of us came back from the Netherlands, and she planted them. But I’ll have my own next year for sure 🙏🏼

In that case, I would call your local nurseries and ask if/when they will have BK seedlings, and just grow them from transplant this year, and then ferment the seeds to plant next year.

Well you’re in luck, BK originates from Crimea (Krim) so it’s not only cold tolerant, but likes a little chill!

All the luck! Your first BK tomato is one to remember. What zone are you in? I’ve grown them a few times, and in my experience, you want them ripening in consistent high 60s / low 70s.

Also, the green tomatoes that never look ripe so you don’t trust the taste, the ones that are more scabs than fruit, the ones that are ribbed for some reason, that one obscure artisan tomato from an exotic place that hates you and the world and being alive and never ever makes it to fruit… I’ll stop
