@chaunton.bsky.social found J.P. on Find a Grave, and he was a farmer-turned-teacher who moved to Bellevue, NE. We were able to visit his grave in person. Got goosebumps experiencing someone’s life arc like that.

I particularly enjoyed seeing J. P. amuse himself with all the different styles of lettering. Favorite section: Promiscuous Questions. For all his great care, he really couldn’t be bothered to draw an American flag.

Adventures in estate sales. Purchased a collection of manuscripts, all written by J. P. Kast from 1850-1851. They appear to be exercises from Bonnycastle’s Mensurations. The handwriting and technical drawings are exquisite.
