This week on mission drift: Your responses reminded me why this work matters. So many leaders navigating the impossible bargain—grow big enough to get resources, watch those resources warp everything.

Next week: how funders fund their own kind through proximity, not malice.

EPISODE 6 now available: Remember the Small Victories.

Every shower matters.
Every conversation matters.
Every moment of dignity restored matters.

You may not end the crisis today, but you absolutely made someone's day better.

Let's be honest about where we are: LA needs 500,000 affordable units. At current pace, we're building 3% of what's required. Commercial development model asking for $708,000 per unit isn't working.

Meanwhile, 77% of extremely low-income families pay over half their income for rent.

Before every Olympics, host cities face the same choice.

Our research found that over 20 years, Olympics displaced 2+ million people globally. The pattern is clear: hide the crisis, don't solve it.

LA can break this pattern. We have 3 years to build permanent housing.

60,000 people lose housing yearly in LA County. Prevention is cost-effective. But we call it a giveaway while crisis response burns millions.

Which makes more sense? Learn more: buff.ly/QNqqzNA

Revealing conversations happened in the margins. Over lunch. In parking lots. That's where we talked about capitalism as religion, why 40 years of policy failed, and whether we should work within the system or tear it down. Part 3 is live.

LAHSA suffered accusations of malfeasance for years. Their close relationship with the homelessness industrial complex allowed vast funds spent without accountability.
Now they're disbanded. HSH is being built almost from scratch.
Will agencies change how they provide services?

LA County: 5,000 square miles. 100+ languages. Mountains, deserts, ocean, thousands of miles of roads. No one size fits all here. But diversity is our superpower. HSH is taking advantage of that strength through these convenings.

Deportations tear families apart, requiring quick response with love and respect for those left behind.

Efforts to erase trans people are moves to exclude minorities. We must be innovative and effective at street level.

This work requires us to be brilliant and loving.

One of our biggest challenges: poor tracking of interactions with people we serve.
Funding creates silos preventing information sharing between agencies. The path to whole care coordination is fraught but fixable.

September 20th marked the most consequential nine months of federal policy change in my lifetime.

Immigration, LGBTQ rights, homelessness policies increasing instability. 60,000 people lose housing yearly in LA. Hundreds of thousands barely hanging on.
Policy has consequences.

LA is hosting 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympics. We need plans NOW to ensure unhoused neighbors retain rights during mass relocations.

Safety and dignity for all requires simple safeguards and planning for hundreds of thousands of visitors.

This can be done right.

The homelessness industrial complex: public institutions positioned to scoop up federal dollars while actual coordination remains broken.

They don't own the data but rely on it to justify funding. Real change requires federal funding structure reform.

Slow but not impossible.

Not you. Facebook, X, Cambridge Analytica & thousands of data brokers made it a commodity. But here's where we'll see the quickest change...
