Another quite depressing read about the decline of manufacturing in Germany. 🇩🇪

“Together, Dax constituents Volkswagen, Thyssenkrupp and BASF have lost €50bn, or 34 per cent, in market capitalisation over the past five years.”

„From the 🇺🇸 , 🇫🇮 and 🇰🇷 to 🇹🇷 , 🇹🇳 and 🇹🇭 , falling birth rates are increasingly downstream of a relationship recession among young adults. Baby bonuses put the cart before the horse when a growing share of people are without a partner.“

3) Nonetheless, low-wage workers in 🇫🇷 have no greater problems moving up the wage ladder than in other countries, but job mobility is low.

2) The 🇫🇷 tax-ben system creates low-wage trap mechanisms on both the labour supply and demand side:

Workers have incentives to take up work at the MW, but net gains from further wage increases are low. For employers, the phase-out of exemptions makes raising wages beyond the MW costly.

🧵 1/3 - Released today, fascinating new #OECD working paper on low-wage employment in #France 🇫🇷

Using linked employer-employee data, survey data, and tax-ben modelling, it shows:

2/ Accessibility differs widely across countries and family circumstances:

When out of work and in the bottom-income decile, more than 4 out of 5 single-person households reported receiving MIB in 🇦🇺 , 🇫🇷 , and 🇬🇧 , compared to 1 in 3 in 🇮🇹 .

The city of #Paris is going to start greening the square in front of its main city hall, planting 90 trees and over other 20,000 plants from January 2025. What I hadn't realised is that the square was only pedestrianised in 1982 and had previously been used by cars.
