The big question: who funds surgical care?

Our speakers Rifat Atun and @markshrime.bsky.social are seeking answers right now, guided by Lubna Samad.

Only 4% of district hospitals and 27% of referral facilities in East, Central, and Southern Africa have functional C-arm X-ray machines (2022 study).

This leads to:
⚠️ Delays in diagnosis & treatment
⚠️ Higher complication rates
⚠️ Limited access to procedures
⚠️ Increased mortality & disability

We are very proud to announce that #SURGhub has reached 10,000 registered learners.

In just 18 short months, we have achieved great impact on surgical training. And SURGhub is just getting started.

My favourite stat this month is that learners spent the equivalent of 6.5 years studying SURGhub's most popular course:

Maternal mortality rates are stagnating globally. Access to safe and appropriate Caesarean Section (a very common surgical procedure) is a key to change that!
Research published in BMJ Global Health highlights the critical role of caesarean sections (CS) in maternal mortality:

⚠️ Over half of maternal deaths in Malawi are associated with CS.

This underlines the necessity of improving access to safe & appropriate CS.
