My family rented this on DVD when it was new. Couldn't get through the movie, but we were surprised to discover the wealth of special features on the disc. It was as though they had interviewed every single cast and crewmember. Sadly we must have missed the featurette where this was discussed.

Sounds like "They Thought They Were Free" by Milton Mayer. I read it in 2017, and it really captures the MAGA mindset.
