Structural vulnerabilities in the NBFI sector are:

2️⃣ Excessive leverage
3️⃣ Interconnectedness with banks & the economy
4️⃣ Fragmented oversight across the EU
These vulnerabilities can reinforce each other, amplify shocks and endanger financial stability.

The current EU regulatory framework for NBFIs has a strong focus on ensuring investor protection and market integrity. However, recent events like the ‘dash for cash’ in 2020 or the UK gilt crisis have shown that entity-level resilience is insufficient to contain systemic risks.
