If ever someone was to set a trap for me, this would lure me in.
Arthurian + WWII + librarian = perfect Alanna-bait.
(The Witch Below the Dreaming Wood by H.G. Parry)

This is some bullshit. I'm going back to bed.

Time to update the thread. I don't remember who, but I saw the cover of The Mountain Crown by Karin Lowachee posted here a few times, I'm into novellas, and who doesn't like dragons so now I have the whole trilogy. They're great! (34/?)

Not sure if these will do, but I'm sure there are good street photos of Riga and Klaipeda out there that would be good for practice

It may be autumn and the leaves are starting to change colour, but there's still time to enjoy the garden.

For your Sunday afternoon #bloomscrolling, a very cheerful daisy.

A lovely surprise in the garden this morning: my strawberry plant is producing again!

A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger was recommended here so many times that even though I don't read a lot of YA books I decided to try it. I got it from the library first, enjoyed it, then bought a copy afterwards. I'm looking forward to reading Elatsoe and Sheine Lende too. (33/?)

I bought Even Though I Knew The End by C. L. Polk after following them here, and after seeing other people recommending it. How could I not, with that cover? It's a highly engrossing story that feels longer than it is. The Midnight Bargain is also excellent. (32/?)

Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon by Wole Talabi was really good. I bought it after seeing reviews shared here. Come for 'fuck the British museum,' stay for the excellent story and unique narrative structure. I have Convergence Problems on my birthday wishlist. (31/?)

Another novella! I followed Suyi Davies Okungbowa here and often found his posts very thoughtful, and then later saw he had a novella published recently. The premise was intriguing and it's well worth the read. So much packed into so few pages. (30/?)

I would have probably come across The Last Hour Between Worlds eventually, being a fan of Melissa Caruso already, but I was convinced to preorder by the reviews I saw posted here. Repeat for The Last Soul Among Wolves. Lovable characters and women with swords! (Jaycel can do no wrong.) (29/?)

Linghun by AI Jiang is kind of a double whammy for this thread because not only did I hear about the book on bluesky, it's also where I heard about the bookstore I bought it from. I've said before I'm a bit of a weenie with dark stories but I was drawn in by the exploration of grief. (28/?)

I also have to credit bluesky with leading me to dip my toes into more fantasy romances. Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater was one of them and I loved it. It's sweet and the world Atwater has created has me wanting to read the rest of her books. The Witchwood Knot is teed up for this fall. (27/?)

Ok it's not just fiction, but it has mostly been. I saw The Copper Promise by Jen Williams mentioned here a few times before I finally bought a copy. It was a fun adventure fantasy with three different and endearing characters. (26/?)

Another nonfiction bluesky book purchase is Speculative Whiteness: Science Fiction and the Alt-Right by Jordan S. Carroll, which I saw recommended a lot here before I finally bought it. It's super interesting and a good gateway into learning more about the history of SF. (25/?)

It's not just fiction either! I followed Niko Stratis here, then started reading Anxiety Shark, and when her book came out I bought it, despite not really being a "music person." Niko has a gift for writing where it always feels like she is writing directly to me personally. (24/?)

And another! It was the promise of an Arthurian story that had me pull the trigger on Foolish Hopes and Spilled Entrails by Devan Barlow, a collection of stories and poems. The poems were my favourites but I'm also here for the anti-Lancelot novella. (23/?)

In this case I heard (on bluesky) about an online book talk with the author Kate Heartfield, attended and followed here, and now I have The Tapestry of Time. The Valkyrie is around here somewhere too. Very different books with great characters, I loved them both. (22/?)
September 6, 2025 at 3:19 PM
Another case of buying an author's books because I enjoyed following them. And What Can We Offer You Tonight by Premee Mohamed may not have been the first one, but I've now bought 7 of her books and have another pre-ordered. (21/?)
September 6, 2025 at 3:09 PM
Yeah I'm a bit of a sucker for Arthurian stories anyway but I hadn't heard of this one until I followed the author here for her interesting posts about SFF and writing. I liked this one, centering the women of Arthurian legend, following the familiar stories from a different perspective. (20/?)

I don't have my own murder board yet but it was posts about other readers making notes on this series that had me The Killing Beach by Skyla Dawn Cameron. Loved it and bought the rest. It's so good. ACAB murder mystery set in Canada that doesn't revel in the violence. I love Waverly. (19/?)

I'm definitely not the only one who bought Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan because someone they follow was hyping it up. It sounded really fun, and it was, but it's not just fun. It was also a good reflection of how it can feel to be seriously ill, and how that changes relationships. (18/?)
September 6, 2025 at 1:54 PM
It was the combination of an intriguing title and liking the cover art that ultimately had me pulling the trigger on Ghost Apparent by Jelena Dunato, and I really enjoyed it. You can read it in an afternoon (I did), and it'll make you want to buy Dark Woods, Deep Water too. (17/?)

I am usually not a horror person but I loved Guillotine by Delilah S. Dawson. I followed the author so when I spotted it with its lovely soft pink cover, I decided to give it a try. Glad I did! A very bloody revenge story. They all had it coming. (16/?)
