We live in a community with folks of all sorts. We’ve got woo-woo spiritual weirdos and artists, brown people terrified of being torn from their home, MAGA bros revving their oversized trucks to intimidate us and everyone else, old back-to-the-landers, trustfund farm folk, and so on.

We raise chickens, geese, and ducks for eggs and companionship. We tried selling eggs for $4/dozen for a while but we quickly realized we’d rather just give them away to our neighbors…

I understand your rage and your sorrow, and I’m not asking for any of that to be tempered. This kind of rage is holy. What I’m suggesting is that there are a lot of poor, marginalized BIPOC, queers, trans folx, etc. living in the south that are fighting for their lives & communities. They’re not 🚽.

There are shitholes and glorious gardens all over the place, north and south. Let’s not hate on our southern neighbors, marginalized people live everywhere. And so does white trash.

Our culture is, obviously, deeply divided. Probably by design, it seems. The far-right is racist and hateful and the far-left is too concerned with infighting and gatekeeping to actually organize.

Amanita muscaria are very special, I think! Not edible, quite hallucinogenic and poisonous. They appear in folk tales all over the world. They actually may be the inspiration for Santa Claus’ traditional red and white clothing and his flying reindeer. Reindeer are known to eat Amanita muscaria.

Oh wow, I had to look up calyptroderma, what beautiful and strange little beings! We don’t get them here in coastal Maine where I live.
