Chronically enraged that I've had ME/CFS since 1992.

The CDC estimates that 820,000 to 830,000 people have severe ME in the U.S. ME is a kind of torture that takes everything pleasurable from the individual and replaces it with a darkened room where an inert body cries out in agony. There is no cure, and many people have suffered for decades.

On this Covid Day of Reflection I’m thinking back to when Francis Collins was head of the NIH. His legacy will be forever marred by his refusal to appropriately fund ME/CFS research. Since Covid and ME/CFS overlap, perhaps a cure or a treatment could be available by now if he had done his job.

On this Covid Day of Reflection, those who follow the science know that Covid still kills and disables. People with long Covid are often diagnosed with ME/CFS, a severely disabling condition without treatment or cure.

In 2020, Anderson Cooper on CNN said scientists were finding lasting bodily damage from Covid.
Five years later, we have made little progress in finding a cure or treatment for long Covid or ME/CFS. We can’t continue to kill and disable millions.

If the NIH had appropriately funded research for ME/CFS during Collins’ tenure, we might have a cure or treatment for ME/CFS by now. His failure to allocate more than token funding for this brutal disease will be a lasting stain on his legacy.

According to a recent NIH study, 4.5% of the people who have had Covid will go on to meet the diagnostic criteria for ME/CFS. There is no cure or treatment for ME/CFS. Patients often experience extreme suffering and a drastic reduction in their quality of life.

According to a recent announcement from the CDC, at least one million children in the U.S. have long COVID. What kind of society are we if we don’t save our children? @maddow.msnbc.com @lawrenceodonnell.msnbc.com @edyong209.bsky.social @georgemonbiot.bsky.social @polybiorf.bsky.social

Over the last three decades, only token efforts have been made by the NIH to research and find treatments for ME/CFS. If treatments had been appropriately pursued in the past, we would likely have treatments to use for long Covid. Now, we have nothing but unimaginable suffering.
