Ullapool Sea Savers

USS is a kids’ marine conservation charity run by kids for kids. People protect what they love: we show people what there is to love about the sea + why it is so important to protect our amazing marine environment.
Wrasse are caught & used as cleaner fish in fish farms. Millions of them are being caught & killed after used. These are amazing fish that should surely have some protection. Would we sacrifice wild birds for chicken farms?

Coming to a door near you!

Keep an eye out for the Ullapool Sea Savers around the village as they launch a new campaign #FlushResponsibly, sharing a sticker and leaflet with information about what should and shouldn't be flushed down the toilet.

More creels and boat handling on Loch Broom.
April 1, 2025 at 12:55 AM
A couple of Ullapool ladies out for a tour on the boat. As well as taking the USS kids out to learn about our marine life, we try to take out those who don't get the chance normally. Nona and Sionaid are both born & bred here but Sionaid hadn't been out on the loch since the 1970s.

Out on Wednesday lifting a couple of creels to see what lives in the loch. Lots of crabs, including toad crabs, + seaweed growth taking off as we finally get into spring. The kids get to learn about our marine life & gain boat handling experience.

A visit to Greenhive to see the work they do recycling and using marine rubbish and see if we can look at sending them some of what we beach clean around Lochbroom and the Summer Isles.

Our species champion sessions allow the kids to explore our library to find a species to help promote & protect & if the compile a fact file to share with others they become that species's ambassador.

Thanks to everyone who helps with this & has donated books & support.

A couple of trips in our Pioner Multi 'Mada-Chuain' (Gaelic for 'Ocean Wolf', which was what they called Orca!) yesterday to lift 2 creels. Crab, lobster, Scorpion Fish & a prawn. Lighter evenings allowing us to do more!

Alisha and Abbie are asking if you'll help us and #vote4theboat in the Tesco Ullapool blue token vote, as funds help us take people out who wouldn't normally get to see the sea.
February 4, 2025 at 5:02 PM
If you are shpping in Ullapool Tesco, please remember to get your blue token and maybe #Vote4TheBoat - Kirsty and Sophe say, because it's the best boat!

All funding really helps us do trips and education for all.

A drone operator filmed as us a pod of dolphin came to say hello. When this happen, stay at a slow speed and consistent direction so as to minimise any chance of injuring these amazing animals. Rewarded great encounter.

We had Cal Major out on our boat on the weekend jelping survey dolphins in the loch off Ullapool, and got to watch them catching and passing seaweed between the pod as part of a social game.

Emptied our beach clean station at Dun Canna today, bringing in 80 kg more marine litter. By allowing visitors at the site to do small beach cleans that we empty when full, we are keeping on top of this remote beautiful beach. Thanks to all that help.

After hearing of a flapper skate attacking a boat at Shetland, Scoraig Primary kids Brodi & Arhlo sent us pictures of one having a go at their boat whilst angling in Little Loch Broom. These are BIG amazing fish but is this normal behaviour?

Part of what we do is take the sea saver kids out on our boat 'Mada-Chuain' (Gaelic for 'Ocean-Wolf' which was the name for Orca here). As well as surveying and learning boat handling skills, we have 4 research creels - the traps used to catch prawn, crab and lobster.
