I know this is pretty old hat, but I can't help but be astonished by how casually this admin will just throw something like this out there - like it wouldn't take just 5 seconds of someone's time to disprove

Besides, it's not like there isn't anyone in close proximity to Trump who would stand to benefit from a major social media platform going dark...right?

...right?

But (like most of you, I imagine) I sincerely doubt Trump will change his tune, and his alleged FCC pick, Brendan Carr, has signaled support for banning the app in the past (as well as in Project 2025).

Some reporting has alleged members of Trump's team are encouraging him to intervene on TikTok's behalf. Trump's even been clipped as saying "I'm going to save TikTok"... on his TikTok.

Currently, TikTok has a case against the government making its way through the D.C. Court of Appeals.

A judgement is due sometime in early December but I wouldn't be surprised if this takes much longer and this case eventually reaches the Supreme Court.

Overall, I’m cautiously optimistic about Bluesky’s future. It's charting the right course, but if I've learned anything over the past decade, it’s that you should always be cautious about the “enshittification” of an online platform. (5/5)

‘Enshittification’ is coming for absolutely everything
The term describes the slow decay of online platforms such as Facebook. But what if we’ve entered the ‘enshittocene’?

The platform’s flexibility in terms of feed functionality really stands out. I’m not opposed to some algorithmic content, but I want more transparency on how it works and where it pulls from. No more posts from the void. (4/5)

I think Bluesky’s design, which closely resembles X/Twitter, is a big advantage. It’s clearly focused on what made X/Twitter successful in the first place—microblogging and curated personal networks. (3/5)

Mastodon was available right away, and Threads launched publicly in July 2023. Turns out that immediate accessibility—while initially beneficial—might not be the ultimate factor in determining where the majority of X/Twitter departees end up. (2/5)
