"Rental Family" could have been one of the greats, if the director Hikari had told one story of an American actor (Brendan Fraser) in Tokyo, who finds a side gig playing roles in real people's lives. The movie has too many plot threads interweaving.

Review: 'Rental Family,' with Brendan Fraser as an American actor in Tokyo, doesn't dig deep enough to overcome its sentimental streak — The Movie Cricket
Somewhere buried in the fish-out-of-water comedy-drama “Rental Family” is a solid character study about an American actor in Tokyo that Brendan Fraser could really grabbed with both hands. Alas, that...

Being George Clooney isn't as easy as it looks, according to "Jay Kelly," in which Clooney plays a movie star who's rethinking the priorities that made him famous but alienated his daughters. Clooney and Adam Sandler, as Jay's manager, have good chemistry.

Review: 'Jay Kelly' is a surprisingly thoughtful road trip, where George Clooney shows the sad side of being, well, George Clooney — The Movie Cricket
Have you ever wondered how much it would suck to be George Clooney? Me neither, but director Noah Baumbach devotes much time considering that question in a surprisingly moving comedy-drama, “Jay Kelly...

The best new movie this week is Joachim Trier's "Sentimental Value," an emotionally raw story of a movie director (Stellan Skarsgard) and his two daughters — one (Renate Reinsve) an actress, the other (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) a homemaker.

Review: 'Sentimental Value' puts two great actors, Stellan Skarsgard and Renate Reinsve, in a wrenching tale of love, loss and art — The Movie Cricket
The Norwegian-set drama “Sentimental Value” raises two questions that movie critics ask at this time of year, as the award-season talk overrides all other thought: Is Stellan Skarsgard one of the grea...

Netflix's new animated movie "In Your Dreams" is no "K-Pop Demon Hunters." It's a serviceable, if not particularly memorable, children's adventure — where a teen girl and her little brother enter the land of dreams. Frustratingly adequate, but no more.

Review: 'In Your Dreams' is a frustratingly adequate animated adventure, with no highs or lows to break it out of the middle ground. — The Movie Cricket
There’s nothing drastically wrong with the animated fantasy “In Your Dreams,” but there’s nothing spectacularly right about it, either — it just sort of exists, inoffensively frittering away 90 minute...

"Now You See Me: Now You Don't," the third movie in the magician heist franchise, is a fun, bubbly action movie that reunites Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco and Isla Fisher — plus some nice surprises. Nearly as smart as it thinks it is.

Review: 'Now You See Me: Now You Don't' revives the magician franchise with a fizzy and fun heist caper. — The Movie Cricket
The magician heist movie “Now You See Me: Now You Don’t” — the third in the series that started back in 2013 — is nearly as smart as it thinks it is, which is considerable, and delivers a fair amount ...

I didn't get to see "Predator: Badlands," which takes the tooth-endowed villain of the "Predator" series and [checks notes] makes him the hero? Maybe I'll catch it laster.

Jennifer Lawrence gives a career-best performance in "Die My Love," director Lynne Ramsay's harrowing drama about a young mother going mad in rural Montana, and her partner (Robert Pattinson) unable to cope with her moods.

Review: 'Die My Love' is a dark ride into madness that gives Jennifer Lawrence the grittiest and most compelling role of her career — The Movie Cricket

The week's best new movie is "It Was Just an Accident," the latest film Iranian director Jafar Panahi has made in secret — a suspenseful, sometimes oddly funny, story of revenge and self-doubt among a group of torture survivors. Shatteringly intense.

Review: 'It Was Just an Accident' shows director Jafar Panahi telling a moving story of revenge and doubt, while slyly skewering the Iranian regime — The Movie Cricket

Review: "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You" gives Rose Byrne a role that she rips into, but doesn't provide enough support for her brilliant performance — The Movie Cricket
