Honored to join @spun.earth on another expedition mapping fungal networks. This time we are in Greece , at Vikos gorge in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Zagori.

Recently, we mapped endemic fungal networks in Zagori 🇬🇷 with @seanmaston.bsky.social, @vkokkoris.bsky.social and team.

Vikos Gorge is a hotspot for endangered species, with underground systems supported by rock formations ~160 million yrs old.

We're now returning to cover more ground.

Reflecting on experiences that have shaped my academic path —being awarded the 2024 Schoenstein Sustaining Excellence Scholarship at @oregonstate.edu, was a big deal.

Scholarships like this are vital for undergrads starting out in research.

I talk about this and more on the Beaver Tales podcast:

I'm excited to share a recent podcast episode I did with @oregonstate.edu Ecampus.

In our conversation, we talk about my journey- from high school to the U.S. Coast Guard, and through some of my undergrad experience in botany🌱.

I am very proud to have been a 2 year member of the Ecampus Student Advisory Board at @oregonstate.edu.

Check out this article I wrote if you are curious about engaging in undergraduate research as an online student.
From Oregon State Ecampus to the lab: A journey in undergraduate research
Here's how to gain hands-on research experience — and the confidence to pursue graduate school — from the perspective of an online learner.

Why are @vkokkoris.bsky.social and @seanmaston.bsky.social exploring deep soil fungi?

Underground fungal networks are crucial for drawing carbon belowground. Topsoil carbon can be released due to land use and agricultural practices, so the role of deep soil fungi remains vital.

A special type of ancient fungi live deep beneath the soil’s surface and can help lock away carbon for thousands of years.

@vkokkoris.bsky.social, Mica Tosi & @seanmaston.bsky.social are digging deep in Arizona, looking to unlock their full potential.
