In the back of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐞 you will find book club questions. The book covers under-explored aspects of women’s social history and provides an opportunity to discuss some of these topics alongside the plot, characters etc.
Why not consider it for your next read?

I dropped off an advance copy of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐌𝐢𝐝𝐰𝐢𝐟𝐞 to the lovely team at WHSmith in Belfast City Airport. We’re hoping to arrange a book signing for September when the book is officially launched.

My next histfic book is a follow up to Peggy’s story, featuring her friend Kathleen who is a Belfast handywoman (uncertified midwife).
But it’s 1941 and the Belfast Blitz is about to happen…
Currently editing this one and am really pleased with it!

I absolutely love it! Peggy is right there, looking gorgeous, we can see the red-brick streets of Belfast and the fancy neo-classical buildings of Dublin. If you look closely you’ll even see the bicycle!

My favourite secondary character
Dan, our hero, has a roommate called Paudie who is from Cork. Here’s the exchange where they’re all working out which of the student midwives they fancy.

My heroine’s greatest fear
The secrets Peggy is keeping become increasingly burdensome. She can never let down her guard. She is not wealthy like the other student midwives. She used to work as an illegal midwife. And worst of all, the man she’s fallen for is her family’s enemy

Your mc’s greatest strength
Peggy has many challenges to handle - poverty, life as a Belfast milly, the loss of her beloved aunt.
Later, she has to manage secrets, work hard at her studies, and deny her feelings for a certain handsome doctor…

Nope! No consistent antagonist, though my heroine Peggy has to cope with a few arrogant, self-centred people along the way.

Introduce your protagonist
Peggy Cassidy, 20. Poor millworker from Belfast.
Unexpectedly gets the opportunity to train as a midwife in the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin, but has to hide her poor origins- plus the fact she’s an experienced ‘handywoman’ - an uncertified midwife!

Places and people- real or fictional?
My people are mostly fictional, though I’ll occasionally weave in a real person.
My places, though, are almost always real. This is the entrance corridor to Belfast’s Royal Maternity Hospital

1930s Ireland, and everything is changing. The Free State has its independence from Britain and six counties in the north have been partitioned. War is coming - the Nazis are on the rise.
