The Oankali are not out right violent, rather highly emotionally manipulative.

I rate this book a 9/10
Can’t wait to finish the rest of the series.

Forcing humanity to breed with the aliens in order to survive. They essentially keep them willfully in the dark which leads to character death. They often drug humans. And the ending- what Lilith finds out what they did to her is the cherry on top.

Finally I love how ignorant the Oankali are and that AFFECTS their oppression. Which there is no such thing as oppression without ignorance. And the oppression the Oankali inflict is so devious a subversive. For one it’s mostly sexual.
