Gonna go even further: don't refer to it as "consuming media" when doing this. You aren't a consumer - it's not a product. You read books. You look at art. You watch movies and/or videos. Be careful about word choice.

Reject "consume" and REJECT "CONTENT."

I'm being so real right now, learn how to engage in media as art and not a reflection of your own real life morals. consume things that make you uncomfortable and understand why it makes you uncomfortable. Don't just base yours and others morals standings on the media you consume.

YOURE NO BETTER follows a struggling trans boy as he attempts to prove to the world - and himself - that he’s better than the serial killer who raised him. It goes badly.

Crane, the protagonist of You Weren’t Meant to Be Human, doesn’t speak. (Well, he says one word. That’s it.) Crane is based on my experience with autism. Like me, he is a level 1/LSN (low support needs), self-identified autistic. He has regulation issues, struggles socially, has no intellectual disability, and makes use of AAC. Being nonverbal is more than just “not talking sometimes,” and nonverbal autistics have asked that we be more mindful of how that word is used. “Nonverbal” is a word used to help identify autistics with lifelong, continual, physical and/or intellectual struggles with producing verbal speech and being understood by those around them. It does not refer to autistic people like me. Speaking is sometimes extremely difficult, and I rely on AAC to communicate during these verbal shutdowns. I am not nonverbal. Crane refuses to speak for a lot of reasons: Frustration. Resentment. Self-isolation. Avoiding the pain of social interaction. Sheer exhaustion. Giving up. Though he sometimes makes use of AAC - writing notes, rudimentary sign language based on ASL, and apps like Proloquo4Text - he usually refuses these, too. Crane can speak, and communicate, and do so very well. He just WON’T. Because fuck you. A graphic featuring a green-tinted, snow rural road. Text reads: WHAT WORD SHOULD WE USE? That’s a good question. For those of y’all reviewing or discussing the book, how do we discuss Crane’s lack of speech? I just use the word “mute.” Crane thinks of himself as mute, and the narrative reflects this. You can also be straightforward about it. “Doesn’t speak” and “doesn’t talk” aren’t catchy buzzwords, but it’s better than using a very specific term that’s being watered down due to misuse. Thank you for respecting the wishes of our nonverbal community members, and enjoy the book!
