Poor CDC coordination in 2014 accelerated the Ebola outbreak, and government inaction, stigma, and delayed CDC responses allowed the HIV epidemic to spread in the 80s.

The consequences? Erosion of trust (Ebola), and over 10,000 HIV-related deaths by 1985, until Congress approved an AIDS budget.

It’s no coincidence that when the COVID-19 outbreak began at the end of 2019, America’s public health system—now weak and ill-equipped to handle the crisis—found itself unable to respond as it once could.

So what did the 2018/2019 cuts accomplish? Nothing good, and millions dead once the virus hit.

1. Disbanded the National Security Council’s Pandemic Unit responsible for pandemic preparedness (2018)

2. Reduced CDC Presence in China, weakening outbreak monitoring (2019)

3. Terminated PREDICT, a global virus surveillance initiative that had identified over 160 novel coronaviruses (2019)
