@mosh.bsky.social Track 2 of the proposal includes „quantum-resistant, privacy-preserving zero-knowledge credentials (attribute-based/anonymous credentials, linkable ring signatures) for age-gating, reputation, and anti-abuse without tracking“ - iirc we talked about this at the Cypherpunk retreat

If successful, Social-PETs will make decentralised social media competitive with today’s giants - but safer, more transparent, and future-proof.
A European-led path to usable privacy, algorithmic choice, and digital sovereignty on the open social web.

The goal is a PET-ready ecosystem where any DSM - Bluesky/ATProto, Fediverse/ActivityPub, etc. - can integrate privacy-by-design components. Open SDKs, testbeds, and documentation will help SMEs and independent devs build on top of this foundation.

Beyond recommendation quality, we aim at strengthening the whole stack: quantum-resistant privacy-preserving zero-knowledge credentials, privacy-preserving abuse-signal sharing, and verifiable provenance; thus ensuring decentralised social apps remain trustworthy long-term.

Our work covers both training and inference:
- federated optimisation under MPC and differential privacy
- GPU-accelerated trusted execution for inference
- hybrid MPC/FHE for sensitive queries
- on-device personalisation with measurable privacy budgets.

Social-PETs bridges that gap. We propose federated and encrypted learning pipelines that keep data local, aggregate signals privately, and still deliver top-tier feed relevance. Users stay in control; the protocol gains real algorithmic diversity.

Today’s social media giants train opaque algorithms on massive personal datasets. That scale drives usability, but also surveillance and manipulation. Decentralised networks like @bsky.app offer an alternative but still lack privacy-preserving, high-quality recommendation tools.

Jein.
