I like taking apart old clothes to learn the construction and then trying some harebrained idea. Sewing/upcycling can be a cheap hobby if you can show restraint in the face of cool tools and materials.

Waist lines are generally easy (-er) to take in, but shoulders can get tricky. Try clipping it in the back to see how it would look. Binder clips work well. If you are at all interested in learning alterations, make a dress form with duct tape and experiment wildly. It's fun and forgiving!

It depends on the construction and where it's too big. Is it too big all over, or do you just need the waist taken in? Is there a lining? Princess seams?
