Lasseter began developing a story, and in 1993 got the green light from Disney for Toy Story. There would be many creative and technological challenges over the next two years - among them, making Woody more likable, as he was originally mean, spiteful, and “wholly unappealing.”

In 1988, Pixar won its first Oscar for the short film Tin Toy. Already on Disney’s radar, Steve Jobs led negotiations between Pixar and the “House of Mouse” in 1991. Under the deal, Disney would provide financing for Pixar to make full-length films which would be distributed and owned by Disney.

When Lucasfilm ran into financial difficulties, it sold Pixar off to Steve Jobs in 1986 for $5 million. In those days, Pixar focused on selling the Pixar Image Computer, in line with Jobs’ desire to sell “insanely great products.” But Catmull still wished to realize his dream of making movies.

It was the lifelong dream of Ed Catmull, cofounder of Pixar, to make a full-length feature film using computer animation technology. Joining forces with John Lasseter, Catmull and the team at Lucasfilm developed a short film called The Adventures of Andre and Wally B. (1984).

Today, the organization that Karloff helped organize represents around 160,000 actors and media professionals as SAG-AFTRA (formed after SAG merged with the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists in 2012).

In 1946 a replacement was made for Karloff on the SAG board: future President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. It was within SAG that Reagan became political and gained experience in leadership and negotiation. Reagan became President of SAG in 1947, serving until 1952 and again between 1959-60.

Over the years, SAG was pitted against studios to improve compensation and benefits for actors; fought accusations of Communist Party infiltration; members were under the microscope of J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI; and it grappled with residuals for actors whose films began airing on TV.

Karloff endured long hours in the makeup chair and physically demanding scenes. He injured his back during the filming of 1931’s Frankenstein, which later required surgery. Seeking to improve working conditions in Hollywood, Karloff helped launch SAG and joined its Board of Directors.

The dark wood and lack of natural light give the house a distinct foreboding feel, a contrast to the often whimsical appearance of its famous white haired resident. Ghost tours are available too… as the home is allegedly haunted!

The home still stands today as a monument to the great American author. Guided tours bring visitors through the grand dining room, library, billiards room, and elsewhere. Interior design work by Louis C. Tiffany & Co. can be admired in the entrance hall.

During this time, Twain also struck up a relationship with the ailing Ulysses S. Grant, former Civil War General and President of the United States. Twain published Grant’s memoirs, which provided royalties to support Grant’s widow.
