Can books still scare/thrill us, or do we need movies to conjure the scene? Books like Pet Sematary really came alive long before the movie, but I wonder if our video-saturated brains can still work that magic on their own. Who's a modern thriller/sci-fi author that gets your imagination firing?

The Matrix is pure sci-fi, but as we get closer to brain-computer interfaces for everyday tasks, there's a reality we can’t ignore. If we want to thrive in that futuristic world, it's time to put down our phones and focus on a book.

Next time you catch yourself trying to multitask, think of your brain like a juggler’s two hands. It can only hold so many things at a time before, sooner or later, it drops the ball.

If AI really does create the downfall of humanity, it won’t look anything like a scene from I, Robot. It will probably look more like millions of humans relying on AI summaries to recommend home remedies for appendicitis.

For better or worse, surviving the modern world no longer involves successfully slaying a woolly mammoth. Instead, it comes down to how well we adjust to rapid change.

Just watched an update on three years of Smashwords and Draft2Digital together. These folks are still as genuinely invested in readers and authors as they were back when I first joined Smashwords in 2008. Love it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=obgz... @draft2digital.bsky.social @smashwords.bsky.social

"If you really want a respite from information overload, pray for filter failure."

This is from the brilliant (and highly readable) Nicholas Carr, and boy does he nail it in this blog post.

Most days, it feels like all our small, quiet acts of protest against the growing fascist tide in the U.S. are merely tiny, hopeless drops in the ocean. If nothing else, I always come back to this quotation.
