On October 24, 1940, America's 40-hour work week became law after American workers organized and fought for it for more than a century. In the 1800s and early 1900s, many workers labored 80 to 100 hours a week, especially those working in factories, mines and mills. The only day "off" was Sunday. 🧵

On October 17, 1932, government workers gathered for the first convention of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE).

In the booming cotton and textile mills outside Pittsburgh, women and children labored for half the wage that skilled male workers earned.
