Like HOT CAKES and SYRUP
Newark NJ, 2 November 2025

On a pleasant Sunday afternoon hike I passed by this perfect confluence of shops, appropriately closed to honor the Sabbath. Some things are just destined for pairing.

RECAPITULATION
8 September 1959

66 years ago at 4:00 a.m. on this date, this squirrely human first peered out at the world, obviously in need of coffee. It's about time somebody brought me a cup of Café Bustelo, so I can get through the next 33 years. Thank you!

Baltimore's Pennsylvania Station
1 September 2025

Yesterday I made a pilgrimage to my birth town of Baltimore, arriving by train in its beautiful Cathedral of Transportation. Train travel has been in my blood since earliest memory.

SUMMER'S END
ToneBase Piano Camp, Adamant, Vermont

The soundtrack of sunrise here is the cackle of geese as they fly south to the winter.

JOY
Queens, New York, 15 August 2025
Nothing brings a bigger smile to my face and heart, than being at Citi Field when Pete Alonso comes up to bat.

RHAPSODY IN PINK
Greenport, Long Island, 15 August 2025

In Greenport I came upon a friend who occasioned this self-defining photo. I was born in the Chinese Year of the Pig, and they are considered symbols of joy and wealth in most Asian countries. So if pigs be the animal of music, oink on.

WHATEVER GIVES YOU KICKS
31 July 2025

On a morning urban stroll in downtown Newark, I spotted this sign above a former store for running shoes. I don't quite get the association of sculpted calves with orchestral conductors, but the idea of being a Marathon Maestro is a nice one.

With pianist Midori Kimishima, violinist Aya Yoshihashi, and former Hanshin Tigers pitcher Tetsuo Kawajiri, at his sports bar last weekend. Hanshin 4, Yomiuri Giants 0, in twelve innings. Sugokatta! 凄かったね!!!

THAT GIRL (1967 - 1971)
This sitcom about a single woman aspiring to an entertainment career was quietly progressive in its day. Who DIDN'T want to be lovely young Marlo Thomas in glamorous Manhattan? This episode features some surprisingly contemporary issues.

FOUR HANDS ONE HEART
26 June 2025

This evening I performed Rachmaninoff's "Symphonic Dances" for two pianos with Martha Argerich, at the Hamburg Symphony Argerich Festival. Martha is 84 years young, with the virtuosity of a devil, the puckishness of a child, and the soul of an Angel.

OUTRAGE
Major Erica Vandal's story (by Greg Jaffe)
New York Times, 16 June 2025

Read every word, if you can.

Major Vandal is a heroine. Shame on our country for electing a criminal draft dodger and his henchmen who have evicted her from service.
