The reserve pool of pilots varies between airlines and availability. If there are no pilots on reserve to cover the shift then the company starts offering extra pay to off duty pilots. The repercussions are usually delays in flights. I’ve called in 3 times the last 18 months. Safety first.

I’m an airline pilot. We are protected if we call in fatigued because we feel we’re too tired to safely fly.
