On the trails, in early spring,
Less heat, more mud,
A tenuous compromise.
It is the smell of it
That brings me back.
The smell of earth and growth,
New life even in the old places.
I breathe it in, carry it with me.
For those times,
When the journey gets long.

Empire Builder, Saint Paul to Seattle,
And all stops in between.
I watch the echoes of this country
From the window of a sleeper car
on a winter train,
And I think it a shame
How quick we fly
From point-to-point,
Losing touch
With the world between.
