I’m a trans therapist who helps trans people and has her dream job.

I love talking with people and hearing other perspectives :)

Always try to be nice, but never fail to be kind.
Villainizing testosterone or estrogen for that matter is ultimately misplaced and insidious.

But it has VERY limited utility in the emotional and identity development process of transition for some.

It cannot, though, be the stopping point, but rather a stop along the way.

I needed to clarify it anyways, it was late when I wrote it.

And absolutely, there are other things to focus anger on, but systemic marginalization (for example) has no bearing on the physical changes themselves (for example) that incongruous hormones compel.

I agree wholeheartedly that…

Testosterone and estrogen are amazing, magical substances that help those who use them achieve a level of peace and authenticity that is genuinely incredible.

The unintended consequences of which is the exact opposite of what we all want.

It’s not a morality perspective, it’s a “meet people where they are” and give them space to express themselves while giving them an opportunity to explore process it and evolve their perspective.

Again, my intention was not to affirm the villainization of testosterone. That’s just wrong.

My point was that the anger that some people feel towards it, and the absence of any other target (limited to the physical effects of it) is valid.

Validation ≠ agreement.

My point was that it’s understandable that, lacking anyone to “blame” for the pain or the challenge of dysphoria, it’s not surprising that people would find something to focus their ire on.

It’s just not black and white. Looking at it as such, can be unintentionally invalidating.

Hormones are about as close to magic as exists in their ability to change all aspects of who we are, how we see ourselves, and how we exist in the world.

Villainizing testosterone from a transfemme perspective is an understandable emotional reaction to its effects, given the lack of other targets for the developmental changes it causes and the pain that can result. However, the utility of villainizing it is limited to that framework.

She’s from grantham. Apparently, we drove through your hometown the last time we were there :)

I fuckin love the woods of NH.

My wife is also from nowhere, New Hampshire… absolutely lovely area :)

Thankfully they level out!

That’s the biggest challenge from the paucity of research.

The range for feminization and the range for mood/energy aren’t always the same.

Short answer: we need to science the shit out of trans medicine… which unfortunately just isn’t happening.

I was in the 400s for a while and I felt great, but I’m having bottom surgery in 2 weeks and my doctor wanted me to bring it down, which I understand.
February 27, 2025 at 3:45 AM
As wonderful as injections are, and personally I think they should be the standard of care (again, though, not a doctor)… the initial spikes can be ROUGH.
February 27, 2025 at 3:43 AM
Oh my.

I’m so sorry you have to deal with that.

Stay strong. You are wonderful.
February 27, 2025 at 3:40 AM
Sorry I should have clarified that.

150-ish is considered ideal for trough. Again, though, there’s a lot of debate as to both the origin of that range (limited sample size of research) and whether it is impacted by an overly conservative and overcautious risk assessment.

Ideal for estrogenic transition*
February 27, 2025 at 3:29 AM
Clinically 100-200 is considered ideal, but due to a paucity of research, there is some disagreement about whether that is too conservative of a range.

(Note: I’m a gender therapist, not a doctor… so take that for what it’s worth)

Seconded
