Wei Ying flinches, but puts on a new smile. “Don’t sound so impressed.” He cranes his neck to look behind Lan Wangji, sees the sprawling hall completely deserted, and his face falters again. “Oh, shit, you mean I’m too late.” Lan Wangji steps aside, intending to let Wei Ying pass, and to follow. “Maybe not. The speeches have just started.” But Wei Ying doesn’t move. “Right.” He glances back at Lan Wangji. “You were leaving? Right, yeah, it’s like your bedtime, isn’t it.” He shoves his hands in his peacoat pockets. “So. Good launch. Contract’s up, huh? I guess this is –” “I will stay,” Lan Wangji says. “Good-buhhh - but you were –” Lan Wangji has had time to think. He’d tasted what it would feel like to keep the words in his throat, that white regret. “I was waiting for you.” Wei Ying stares at him. Then he jolts back to life with a, “Oh, I’m not presenting. The other guys have like, a whole reel. Very flashy, paid actors."
